Our goal is to let the membership guide this club, own its success and define its future evolution.

Back in November, I never thought I would be leading the MBCA during such a dramatic, trying time.  I had so many plans of what events I would attend, what shows we would promote and what sections I would visit.  Fortunately, I still have those plans.  Unfortunately, they have been delayed for a bit as the world adjusts to this new reality.  But don’t worry, I have channeled my energy in multiple directions and have been working with leadership and multiple stakeholders as we look towards our future, and I like the initial progress, which I am excited to share with you.

Though I wasn’t surprised, I was saddened to see the last two concours, Concours d’Elegance of America in Michigan and Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance, cancel their 2020 events in May.  But the Social Media Committee of the MBCA had already adapted and adjusted our digital presence to promote a national event, a virtual car show of MBCA members on May 2. I heard from multiple members that they “got up early,” particularly on the west coast, to enter their cars as soon as they could after the 9:00 am open for entries.  From the feedback I received about this event, I know members were complimenting each other on their cars, engaging in tech talk and detailing tips, and planning on when they might next get together.  It was really heartening to know our members can still engage with each other and keep those relationships strong, and that new relationships can form even though the way we function as a club has changed dramatically.

Behind the backdrop of the past year’s activities and the new normal of virtual car shows, a Strategic Planning Committee has been working hard to craft a viable business model and plan for the MBCA as we look towards our future.  This committee has weighed in on various member benefits and strategies for engagement among members.  The committee believes that more extensive and structured discovery needs to be done to ensure that the MBCA of the future balances our history and culture with the rapidly changing demographics and preferences surrounding ownership and enthusiasm of Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Our national board has approved a plan to have a moderated discovery process with various stakeholders, including national leaders, local leaders, partners and members at large. Over the next few months, we will be engaging with stakeholders across the organization, not just the national board. Our goal is to let the membership guide this club, own its success, and define its future evolution. As we look towards our future, I hope you contribute if requested, and that you give constant feedback to your local and national leaders so we can ensure that the MBCA consistently updates its strategy and approach in a thoughtful manner.  That is how this organization will remain successful long-term.

As restrictions are slowly lifted, I am starting to read about, and even attend, events that incorporate proper safety precautions so our members can gather, enjoy each other, and still remain safe.  My request to section leaders is to respect the various health challenges our population may face; please do schedule these events, but ensure proper safety measures are taken.  That said, my hat is off to section leaders and members who are bravely reopening our community so that we may remain close until some level of normalcy resumes.  Until then, rest assured that we are working hard to ensure our club is prosperous in the future.
