President’s Message – Steve Dierks

Celebrating the Enthusiasm

This is a great time to be a member of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. From coast to coast, MBCA Sections have participated in a series of warm-weather events while celebrating their common enthusiasm for the Mercedes-Benz brand. Section events included tech sessions, collection tours, road rallies, car shows, social gatherings and much more.
On June 8, the Northern New Jersey Section hosted the 50th annual June Jamboree at the Mercedes-Benz USA facilities in Montvale, New Jersey. Members displayed 44 of their favorite cars in the concours and 52 cars in the popular-vote category.

The W113SL model was the featured car for the event. Affectionately called the Pagoda, the W113 was introduced in 1963. Members displayed many of their treasured model W113s as part of the event. The model 600 was also introduced in 1963 and an excellent example was displayed for participants’ enjoyment. Congratulations to the Northern New Jersey Section for hosting another successful June Jamboree.

And the leadership of the International Stars Section participated in the organization and execution of the 35th annual Concours d’Elegance of America in June. With the support of MBUSA, the Section displayed the new 2014 S-Class in the MBCA tent. The event included a motoring tour and a seminar on the Pagoda and the Grosser 600, attracting club members from Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, Washington, D.C., and Ontario.

The concours included two Grosser 600s and five Pagodas; four other Mercedes-Benz examples were displayed. The judges selected a 1935 500K Cabriolet A Sindelfingen to receive the MBCA-sponsored Most Significant Mercedes-Benz award. Congratulations to the International Stars Section for its participation in the planning and execution of the Concours d’Elegance of America.

In conjunction with the other major German car-enthusiast clubs, Western Region sections leadership co-sponsored the fourth annual Legends of the Autobahn. Presented as an element of the Monterey Classic Car Week, the event was an opportunity for German-car enthusiasts to display elements of their private collections. With the support of MBUSA, the 2014 S-Class was displayed along with many member-provided examples. Each car displayed was significant, having had an impact on automobile history and providing an example of legendary German automotive quality. Congratulations to the Western Region for its participation in this popular event.

In my previous column, I shared the results of member feedback regarding the MBCA’s subsidized events structure and a summary of the recommendations to board members. I promised you that the board would do something with those results. The current structure has been reviewed and specific recommendations were considered at an interim board meeting in August. The recommended changes include modifications to both the MBCA Standard Operating Procedures and the MBCA Rule Book. The final edits will be submitted to the board for action at the annual members’ meeting in November. Contact your Regional Director for specific information about the proposed changes. I hope to see you at an MBCA event very soon.

Drive happy,
Steve
