MBCA and the Future

 

Last time, I wrote about the spectacular progress the Mercedes-Benz Club of America has made in running itself like the business that it is. We have made a tremendous number of operational improvements that position the organization well for the future. However, a tight focus on operations and costs only goes so far.

But as things change, the MBCA will continue to be the authoritative source for relevant and timely information on new Mercedes-Benz vehicles, as well as on classic and vintage models. Our members will join and renew their memberships when they perceive a singular value that cannot be matched elsewhere.

For some of us, the MBCA experience is exclusively based on the good information and entertainment value of The Star magazine, Section newsletters and online media. Rest assured that our leadership recognizes that the same excellent journalism needs to continue, and the vicarious experience of being an armchair enthusiast will be provided in print every two months and continuously in our growing online channels. You will be able to learn about new Mercedes-Benz models, including the innovative styling and technology that makes Mercedes-Benz such a cutting-edge manufacturer. You will also be able to read about vintage models, from high-profile restorations to our members’ successes at concours events across the country – and your local peers’ display of Mercedes-Benz vehicles at local and regional events. Regardless of industry changes, the MBCA will remain steadfast in its commitment to provide unique and relevant information on the pride and passion of our membership and the heritage and technical aspects of our automobiles.

For those of us who thrive on the MBCA experience at the local, regional and national levels, the only way to continually attract new participants and retain current members is to ensure that everyone has a memorable experience at each event. We need to maximize members’ satisfaction as they enjoy their vehicles and the company of one another. We need to add new activities that will attract younger families, as well as older individuals and couples.  Attending an MBCA event and hanging out with other members who love cars should be as much fun as anything else they might do. To section leaders and event organizers, I would challenge you to rotate the type of events you hold. If you do a drive-and-dine, do not do another similar event that quarter until you do something different; try a tech session, defensive-driving class, autocross or concours-judging school to show members additional facets of their fine automobiles.

Additionally, we need to make an extra effort to welcome and get to know all enthusiasts who attend our events, not just the people we already know; get to know your peers. The conversations are spectacular and we all quickly realize how different roles and backgrounds enhance the experience of everyone attending an event.

We have no idea what the future is going to bring to automobile ownership. Over time, there are going to be multiple changes in technologies (gas, diesel, hybrid, electric … what’s next?). There will be multiple changes even in the way people own cars as the sharing economy broadens and becomes relevant to an increasing percentage of the population. Our club can continue to thrive if we offer a relevant and enjoyable membership experience, providing relevant information about the cars we know and love, and when we welcome members to a wide variety of events across the country.

Together, we have made incredible progress during the past 60 years; the next 60 can be even better if we sustain the MBCA’s commitment to excellence and the enjoyment of its members. As the automotive industry embarks on what will be meaningful change, I invite all club members to share their talents and enthusiasm with current and prospective members of the MBCA.
