Adventures through the Windshield

Gary Anderson

Here at The Star we enjoy concours displays and car shows as much as our readers. But you may have noticed that we make every effort to include articles on the proper use of the automobile, as Bertha Benz demonstrated in 1887: It’s for journeys and the adventures that make them memorable.

In this issue, we lead off with the photographs of Kristen Bor, whose primary residence during the past three years has been the Sprinter Van she converted into a traveling office and true recreational vehicle.

We also highlight the adventure of two young club members, Scott Brinkley from Albuquerque and Rubin Howard from Toronto, who together embarked on a driving adventure in the automotive Fantasyland of Los Angeles.

No less of an adventure – though close to his work place – was Jaime Kopchinski’s expedition to an abandoned warehouse with the promise of finding multiple vintage automobiles. It was his discovery of a forgotten 10,000-mile 1959 Ponton 219 that he now drives and enjoys that made that journey memorable.

We are also including a small group of adventurous enthusiasts of the 1993-1995 E320 and 300CE cabriolets who alerted this magazine to their particular model focus.

And if you remember Elisabeth and Fred Smits – they’ve just sent us pictures from their latest adventure in the mountains between Chile and Argentina on their now-three-year-old round-the-world tour in their Ponton, which will appear in our next issue.

You’ll continue to see these kinds of stories in The Star magazine because we hope to encourage you to plan your own adventures this year – whether to Alabama for StarFest® 2018, Colorado for the Silver Stars and Golden Aspens tour in September, or just on a weekend tour with your local MBCA section. And if you can’t go yourself, you’ll at least be able to vicariously enjoy others’ adventures in these pages.
